Juncus procerus is a semi-aquatic plant. In the Chilean Patagonia it is typically encountered in lakes and edges of terrestrialization fens. In inundated zones, its roots and rhizomes can remain in the soil for thousands of years. The Mapuche and Chono people used it for basket-weaving and as ornamentation.
